“Praying Through the Bible” — a study of biblical prayers
This is a project I have worked on since 2009 using all the research and writing I had done on prayer. I read through the Old and New Testaments to locate every biblical prayer, mention of prayer, or implication of prayer in the Bible. My idea was to write a “devotional commentary” on each one, as a resource to help people enrich their prayer lives (and mine!) through studying the biblical prayers.
I found hundreds of prayer passages, many that are often overlooked as such. I began writing blog posts on Blogger.com: one post for each passage. Each included background study and some comments on how the particular passage might teach us something about our own prayers.
After writing 96 posts (from Genesis through 2 Samuel 22), I decided it was time to engage the project more seriously and develop a website devoted to it. It is now up and running, and you can visit it here.
To read the Introduction to the project, click “Information” at the top of the site. There are also sections with list the prayers by each book (so far), and a page of resources about prayer.
Feel free to ask questions or comment (click “Leave a comment” under the title of each post). You can subscribe to the site to receive an email when new studies are online (see “Subscribe to Blog” on the left of any page)
I will continue posting weekly studies until we reach the last verse of Revelation (which is a prayer). New resources and other information will be added periodically to the site.
