How to Offer a Prayer of Confession and Repentance (1 Samuel 7.5-9)

I will pray to the LORD for you.

Do not cease to cry out to the LORD our God for us, and pray that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.

Samuel cried out to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him.

1 Samuel 7.5-9

In this prayer study, we learn that the people of God have not followed God properly, and they are suffering because of it.

Not only do they ask God for forgiveness, but they ask their leader to pray for them too. Moreover, these prayers are full of emotion, as they should be. Just like in a human relationship, we experience emotion when we betray someone, or are betrayed. Often, these prayers are described as “crying out” to God.

This passage serves as a good model for us to learn how to pray prayers of confession and repentance.
